There has been much debate between the use of bio-identical hormones vs. the synthetic, drug hormones. You may already have an opinion formed about this, but I wanted to get down to brass tacks and offer a simple and honest answer to the questions; Is there really a difference between the two, and why should I choose one vs. the other?

Small Change…BIG Difference!

When comparing any two substances you really need to look at the molecular structure of those substances to see if they are truly alike or not. When comparing bio-identical hormones to synthetic hormones there is a clear difference in the two. Most hormone preparations are derived from yam and soy plants. However, These plant hormones have to then be converted by biochemists into forms that can be used by humans….it is at this point where the major differences begin.

Bio-identical hormones are modified to have the exact same molecular structure as the hormones that are made by the human body. However, synthetic hormones are modified into a drugs that is “similar” to a human hormone, but is not identical to the hormones produced by the human body. The difference between the two may look minor, but even minor changes to a molecule creates drastic changes.

For example, if you take a water molecule, which we all know to be H2O, and add just one more oxygen atom, it becomes Hydrogen peroxide H2O2! Are water and hydrogen peroxide the same…of course not. This is essentially what drug companies expect us to accept when they tell us that their drugs are the same as bio-identical hormones!

Why Do Drug Companies Do This?

The answer to that comes down to one big reason…bio-identical substances can not be patented. Since a drug company can not get a patent on bio-identical hormones, they simply alter the molecular structure so that it becomes a molecule that does not exist in nature. This basic difference is intentional and essential. It allows the patenting of these “hormones” and needless to say, patented medications generate BIG profits.

How Does the Body React to Synthetic Hormones?

Since a hormone’s molecular structure determines its role in the body, even the smallest of changes to its molecular structure can completely change the effects it has in your body. There has been a lot of research conducted over the past several decades that clearly show how these drugs, such as Premarin, Provera, and Prempro, may cause serious health conditions. Two of the more major studies were the Women’s Health Initiative conducted in the US, and the Million Women Study in Great Britain. Both clearly documented how these drugs increase the risk of serious conditions such as breast cancer, heart attack, stroke, pulmonary embolism, and Alzheimer’s disease. Today, pharmaceutical companies literally face thousands of lawsuits over these seriously flawed drugs.

Some of the Risks Associated with Synthetic Hormones:

  • Increased risk of cervical and breast cancers
  • Increased risk of heart attack and stroke
  • Infertility
  • Decreased bone density
  • Migraines
  • Decreased mental sharpness
  • Anxiety/Depression
  • Higher blood pressure
  • Gall bladder disease
  • Increased risk of blood clotting

How Does the Safety & Effectiveness of Bio-Identical Hormones Compare?

Since bio-identical hormones are molecularity identical to the hormones your body produces, they are able to be properly utilized by your body. The do not have the same negative side-effects that non-bio-identical hormones do. In fact, the differences in health effects between bio-identical and synthetic hormones are in many cases polar opposites. Many of the same studies that have shown the negative health effects of synthetic hormones have also shown the beneficial effects that bio-identical hormones can have on your health.

Some of the Positive Health Benefits of Balancing your Hormones with Bio-Identical Hormones:

  • Decreased risk of cancers of all types
  • Decreased risk of blood clots
  • Decreased risk of atherosclerosis
  • Improved bone density
  • Improved fertility
  • Improved moods
  • Improved brain function

How Do I Get Bio-Identical Hormones?
