Treat the Underlying Cause of Toenail Fungus
- Posted on: Sep 3 2015
An estimated 35 to 36 million people in the United States have Onychomycosis (Toenail Fungus). If you are one of these people, then you already know how it can affect your life. You may be embarrassed to go barefoot at the pool, wear sandals, or wear open-toed shoes.
A yeast overgrowth in your system can manifest itself in various ways, including:
- Bloating / Gas
- Acid Reflux
- Vaginal Yeast Infections
- Athlete’s Foot
- Rashes & Skin Irritations
- And Yes, TOENAIL FUNGUS!
What Causes It?
Some toenail fungus is cause by dermatophytic fungi. You can come in contact with this fungus in various ways, including walking barefoot in a locker room floor, infected nail clippers, or exposing an injured toenail to an infected area.
Oftentimes toenail infections actually have their origins from within the body. If you have ever taken antibiotics, then you may have issues with yeast overgrowth in your body, also known as Candidiasis. When you take antibiotics, you are getting rid of the ‘bad’ bacteria in your system, but unfortunately, it will simultaneously diminish the ‘good’ bacteria that your body needs, specifically in your digestive system. Without the good bacteria, there is nothing to regulate the yeast in your body. Subsequently, yeast growth runs rampant in your bloodstream and can affect areas that seem unrelated.
How Do You Treat Toenail Fungus?
My approach to medicine is holistic, meaning I look at the whole person, not just a symptom. Therefore I always take a two step approach to treating toenail fungus. This process includes treatment of the toenails themselves, and addressing the root cause to prevent future occurrences.
Until recently, the treatments for Onychomycosis have not been terribly effective. However, we are proud to announce that we have a new laser that produces absolutely fantastic results called the Fotona ClearSteps Procedure. The Fotona laser uses the power of Nd: YAG laser light to heat evenly throughout the depth of the effected nail and skin tissue, effectively weakening and killing fungi within the patient’s nails. The natural growth and immune processes of the body are then able to restore the nail to its pristine state. The Fotona ClearSteps treatment is usually performed four times, at one week intervals.
To determine if a patient has Candida overgrowth we conduct a blood test that measures levels of three separate antibodies (IgM, IgG, and IgA) that the immune system creates if candida is present, as well as levels of candida antigen. If Candida is detected, the severity of the yeast overgrowth will determine the best solution to resolve it and restore balance to your system. We’ll customize a treatment plan for you that may include medical grade supplements, diet modifications and prescription anti-fungals when needed.
