In Relax, Self Care, Wellness, Women

It seems so simple. If we are to live our best lives, then we have to take care of ourselves. Right? This means getting enough rest, eating a balanced diet, getting regular exercise and taking time for ourselves to relax, rejuvenate and reconnect. So, why is this so hard to do? Why do all of us struggle to maintain this important balance in our lives when we know for certain that is always reaps such extraordinary rewards?

I think most of us tend to get stuck in habits or “stories” about how to be successful and what that means. We’re raised with values and role models that don’t necessarily celebrate the idea of self care. To take care of oneself is a selfish, a low priority– at least that’s what generations before us seemed to model. But not anymore. I am so encouraged when I see women from literally all walks of life suddenly understand that their self care is not a luxury, but a non-negotiable necessity. I see more and more women finally making the connection between loving oneself and instilling that same sense of self love into their children.

In many ways, it means that life becomes clearer, simpler and more joyful. A rested and well cared for woman has more patience, more strength and more time for life’s demands. Compassion for others begins with being gentle and kind to yourself. This is what I truly want not only for all the women in my own life, but for people everywhere. There are a couple of books that I absolutely love that describe powerful self-care steps that you can begin today. Check out The Art of Extreme Self Care by Cheryl Richardson and The Mother’s Guide to Self-Renewal by Renee Trudeau. Both are excellent resources.
