Turn Back Time With Limelight IPL

As we age, gravity can really take a toll on our skin, making us look older than we actually are, or feel.  Aging skin becomes thinner and more translucent.  More redness may be visible from capillaries being more visible.  Years of sun exposure can cause age spots and uneven pigmentation.  And although we can’t stop our skin from aging, we can do things to help reverse some of the damage and prevent further damage.  This is where our Limelight IPL Photo-facial can help!  This treatment has the potential to literally make your skin look 10 years younger!

IPL (or Intense Pulse Light) technology delivers high-intensity pulses of broadband light that is non-ablative, meaning that it does not damage the surface of the skin. The intense light is delivered to the deeper layers of the skin (the dermis) and leaves the superficial aspect of the skin (the epidermis) untouched.

What do IPL Photo-Facials Treat?

Skin Tone:

IPLs are effective at removing sun spots, age spots, and other blotches that make the tone of your skin uneven. An IPL device emits a range of light waves that pass through the skin and targets your melanin. The melanin is the part of the skin that contains the brown pigmentation of freckles, age spots, and sun damage. The light beams fragment the melanin pigment and the body is then able to absorb it, making them less visible on the surface.

Skin Redness (Rosacea):

IPLs are highly effective in the treatment of redness caused by Rosacea and dilated or broken blood vessels. The IPL beams penetrate the skin and can target the hemoglobin (the red blood cells in the blood vessels). As the light beams pass through the skin it is absorbed by the hemoglobin causing the vessel walls to collapse. Once many of these tiny vessels are damaged and absorbed by the body, they are no longer visible on the skin’s surface.

Skin Texture:

Lastly, IPL treatments can also help to improve skin texture. It does this through collagen stimulation and by reducing pore size. The fibroblasts that produce collagen and elastin in our skin are prone to UV radiation damage and become less effective as you age. They lose their ability to absorb water as efficiently, causing the skin to become dull and dry. The light from IPL treatments gently heats the cells in the deeper layer of skin (dermis) and stimulates the fibroblasts to produce more collagen, which improves texture.

How does the procedure work?

Each treatment usually lasts 20 – 30 minutes. Before the procedure begins, protective eyewear is given to protect you from the bright flashes of light. When the pulses of light are administered there is a mild pinching sensation, similar to the snapping of a rubber band. Gel and cold air are used to greatly minimize any discomfort. There is no downtime with IPL treatments, however, most patients will experience pinkness or redness, similar to sunburn, that usually fades within a couple hours. Depending on the amount of pigmentation or redness you have will determine how many treatments you would need to get optimal results. On average most people need between 3 – 6 treatments. Each treatment is done 4 weeks apart and between treatments, it is important to avoid the sun for several days and to wear plenty of sunblock for at least two weeks.

Is Everyone a Good Candidate for IPL?

No, Darker complexions, tanned skin, spray tans or recently tanned skin individuals are not good candidates for the treatment. Skin types I – III are acceptable for IPL. For darker skin tones you need a colorblind laser such as Laser Genesis. Men should be aware that facial hair may experience patchy hair loss after treatment, and may only want to treat the areas where facial hair does not grow.

What results can I expect?

After the treatment, your skin will feel smoother and have a more even tone. A gradual decrease in overall redness, flushing, age spots, and fine lines will be more visible after each treatment. Depending on the condition you are treating, your experience will be different. If you follow the recommended treatment protocol, usually 3 – 6 treatments, you can expect to transform your red, blotchy skin into a radiant, glowing complexion!

Over time spots may reappear with new exposure to the sun and from age. Continued treatment and a good sun protection regimen can result in longer-lasting results.
